What is … merchandising?

Merchandising is what merchandisers do!

As a merchandiser, you are to go to a specific store and install or organize merchandise in the store according to instructions given to you by the company. You represent a third party company that contracts with the brand name products you are to merchandise.

Often, you will be asked to follow a Plan-o-gram, which is a chart that explains what the display should look like in the end.  It essentially tells you which product goes next to which other product.

The products you are to place on the shelves, move to a different shelves, reorganize, dust, etc will be pre-determined and you will be told what to do before you get to the store.

Merchandisers can be paid by the job, or by the hour, depending on whether they are hired as Independent Contractors or Employees.

Merchandising is a great addition to mystery shopping. You already have the observation skills needed to be a shopper–expand you your repertoire to include merchandising.

Agreed, Mary. It is great to combine merchandising, demonstrating and mystery shopping.
